Senior Housing Assistance Group Opens New “Discovery Center” for Senior’s
Wednesday, January 07, 2009 – Seattle, WA – It’s no secret that our country’s economic issues have impacted nearly everyone. Senior citizens in particular have felt the pinch with declines in their home values, retirement savings and stock portfolios and the rising costs of rents, utilities and transportation.
Puyallup-based “Senior Housing Assistance Group” (SHAG) announces the grand opening of the new “Discovery Center” at 3642 – 33rd Avenue South in Seattle just off Rainier Avenue South this Friday at 10 am. SHAG is using this new facility to provide affordable housing solutions to seniors who are worried about the financial outlook but want to continue to live independently and don’t want to sacrifice their quality of life.
The new Discovery Center provides one central location in Seattle where active seniors can go to learn about their affordable independent living options and choose from over 4,000 apartments in SHAG’s 27 affordable rental apartment communities for active seniors, including 5 in several of Seattle’s urban village centers.
All of SHAG’s affordable rental apartment communities offer a range of affordable rents that can assist almost every senior reduce their monthly housing and related expenditures. Most utilities are included in the rents, and some communities provide free or very low cost transportation options. Typical amenities include a media center with a home theatre system and free internet access, a fitness center with low impact exercise equipment, and weekly planned activities and events. Some communities even have a rooftop mini-golf course and pea-patch planter boxes for outdoor recreation and enjoyment.
The Discovery Center allows seniors to choose a community based on what location, what type of apartment unit, and what kind of amenities are most appealing to them. Since some age and income restrictions apply, if for any reason a particular senior is not eligible or if one of SHAG’s affordable apartment communities is not suitable, SHAG will make every effort to help them find another suitable housing arrangement.
SHAG is especially excited about the timing of this new concept in senior living research, as it is also celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year.
What previously may have been a daunting task for seniors or their adult children, going from property to property, searching for the right senior living environment, has been streamlined and simplified to make their search much easier, informative and affordable.
“It has long been SHAG’s goal to have a central location where active seniors can come to visit and learn more about what each of our affordable apartment communities has to offer them, since each community is so unique,” said Bill Fenner, SHAG’s Executive Director. “It’s simply a better way for active seniors to learn more about their affordable independent living options and to enable them to make an educated decision on which community they want to call home,” adds Todd Bacon, SHAG’s Director of Marketing.
SHAG’s Discovery Center provides a one-stop learning experience with video presentations, details on floor plans, unit layouts, rents, income qualifications and the various amenities offered at each of SHAG’s 27 affordable apartment communities.
Grand opening weekend festivities will begin this Friday 11/7/08 at 10 am, with a special introduction for media and social services agencies and civic organizations to be held Friday at noon by invitation only. The Discovery Center will be open to the public on Saturday 11/8/08 and Sunday 11/9/08, with complimentary food, refreshments and giveaways.
